As far as I can work out the code should be universal on the eShop, although I'm in the UK so they may have given me a EU-only code. You have to redeem the code by November 30th or it will expire, but it gives you a full copy of the game linked to your eShop account.
This isn't a recommendation code, so you don't have to have registered a new 3DS XL to be able to claim it. As this is my cakeday, I'm feeling generous, so one lucky r/3DS user will get a free copy of the game to download from the eShop! Due to a mix-up with the Animal Crossing recommendation codes, I actually ended up getting a spare download code for the game.
